"What is news?" I think the proper question is, "What isn't news?" Everything around us can be considered news, for everything we come across is new in its own way! Nothing ever happens the same exact way twice, therefore everything is new, which considers it to be news.
Basically, I think news can be anything you come across. It can be something you read; a newspaper has the word "news" right in it! It can also be something you hear, as many radio stations deliver the news. It can be something that you watch; the TV is filled with news channels! And finally, it can be something that you get from friends- as long as somebody is telling you some sort of information that you have not heard before, I consider it to be news.
I strongly believe that news is everywhere. Just by typing this I am surprising myself with well thought out words, which are news to me as they come into my conscience! The main characteristic of news that makes it different from other types of communication is that it is always... wait for it... new! If it weren't new information, then it would not be considered news, in my opinion. All in all, anything and everything can be considered news as long as it is, in fact, new.
